Globally, about 1 billion people seek healthcare from facilities with unreliable or no electricity, posing significant risks to patient care. Nexleaf Analytics, a non-profit technology company that designs and implements IoT solutions for low- and middle-income country health systems, tackled this challenge by deploying IoT sensors and partnering with PagerDuty to provide a real-time monitoring platform across eight hospitals in Kenya, ultimately scaling up to 15 more for a total of 23 hospitals. These sensors provide real-time data on grid outages and generator usage to health facility workers called biomedical engineers (BioMeds). This data-driven approach transformed the BioMeds’ role in power management from reactive to proactive, ensuring generators remained fueled, eliminating costly last-minute diesel expenses and preventing blackouts that could endanger patients. For example, one hospital discovered they were sharing electricity with a neighboring facility, leading to early-morning power outages. Adjusting energy usage patterns helped them maintain a stable power supply.

The integration of PagerDuty into Nexleaf streamlined real-time notifications, eliminating the need for constantly checking on the generator in person and enabling faster responses to outages. Improved visibility into backup power usage helped facilities manage diesel expenses, improve financial projections and engage power companies more effectively to reduce outage durations. By leveraging data, Nexleaf and PagerDuty empowered resource-constrained hospitals to become more energy resilient, ensuring uninterrupted power and safeguarding patient care.

“Armed with the PagerDuty’s reliable, timely alerts, hospital staff can immediately contact the power company when grid power goes down, leading to shorter outages, decreased diesel generator fuel usage, and a lower backup power bill.”
