Who’s Ready to Join Me for the Next 10?
Earlier this year, I wrote a piece celebrating PagerDuty’s 10 year anniversary. It allowed me to reflect on PagerDuty’s success—the people, the technology, and the journey, and it was an enjoyable process to put the proverbial pen to paper and outline everything we were able to accomplish over the years. I ended the piece by stating this was the “beginning” for PagerDuty, but that’s literally an understatement given what’s transpired over the last couple months since I published the post.
Now I’m constantly thinking of what’s next for PagerDuty and how we can continue to innovate and build products that our customers can rely on. The short answer to that question is “people.” One of the most important things I’ve learned in my years being a new founder, a first-time CEO, and now a CTO of a public company, is that people are the greatest differentiator in your business and the primary driver to real growth. It’s about People First.
A “Best Place to Work”
I learned recently that PagerDuty was named one of the 2019 Best Places to Work in the San Francisco Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times and the Silicon Valley Business Journal for the second year in a row. As a founder, I’m always proud and grateful of these achievements. As much as I wanted to build a product that changes lives of developers and IT professionals, I wanted to create a company culture that our employees and I would be proud of.
So what makes PagerDuty a special place? What makes Dutonians excited to come to work? I assure you, it’s more than just the standard Silicon Valley catered lunches and the ping pong table in the office. It comes down to the values that we’ve established and recruiting employees that believe in them.
PagerDuty Values:
- Champion the Customer. User first. Make it easy. Build great products.
- Take the Lead. Disrupt more. Improve everywhere. Learn forever.
- Run Together. Create belonging. Deepen bonds. Team up.
- Ack + Own. See opportunities. Make it yours. Do right.
- Bring Your Self. Earn trust. Be present. Have heart.
I walk around the office daily and observe how Dutonians interact with each other. We’re all devoted to building a meaningful product and changing the lives of our customers for the better. But what’s ever more apparent to me is the respect that everyone has for each other—respect for one another’s knowledge, their abilities, and their input. Our recruitment over the years has been largely successful when it comes to identifying candidates who truly embody the values we’ve established and demonstrate it on a daily basis.

A Team for the Next 10 Years
On April 11, I had the honor of seeing PagerDuty hit a very significant milestone: we went public on the New York Stock Exchange. That moment is just the beginning for the PagerDuty story. I want to make sure that we as a company continue investing in our people. I want to ensure that we continue to bring in candidates that hold similar beliefs, not just in technology development, but also in being respectful and a dedicated team player that sees our values as their own.

We couldn’t have gotten here without all of the “Dutonians” (yes, folks who work at PagerDuty are called “PagerDutonians” or just “Dutonians” for short) who have joined me on this journey over the past 10 years. Looking forward to the next 10 years, I’m certain that we’ll need more amazing people to join us on this journey and hop onto the PagerDuty rocketship (we often refer to PD as a rocketship, given the speed at which we’re moving).
We have offices in San Francisco, Toronto, London, Sydney, Seattle, and we just opened up a new office in Atlanta earlier this year. In addition, we hire lots of remote employees, both in the U.S. and Canada. Check out our careers page for current job openings.

I can’t wait to see the next generation of Dutonians make an impact on PagerDuty’s success.
